However, a few simple measures can keep your dream machine safe and sound.and lower your bike insurance premium.
Use a ground anchor, either bolted into the ground or dug in and concreted over. Ensure it is positioned by a wall, behind the bike so it can't be tampered with.

Use a chain or u-lock to secure the bike to the anchor or another fixed object. You can join a new scheme - Lock it 2 Me - when £10 buys stickers telling other riders to lock their chain into yours, making both your bikes harder to steal.
To increase the chance of recovering your bike in the unlucky event of a theft, have your bike electronically tagged and coded. These tags can be read by police scanners and the codes make the bike less attractive to thieves as they are unable to reuse the coded body parts.

Many providers of cheap bike insurance insist on a 'Thatcham Approved' alarm and immobiliser which will deter casual thieves, although won't stop the pros. Keep your bike out of sight, if possible in a garage with a good quality door lock.
