Drugs & Driving - Roadside Tests Will Catch Drug-Using Motorists
With more deaths caused by drivers under the influence of drugs, roadside tests will be introduced to catch motorists who drive while high on drugs.
The pilot scheme to be introduced next year by the Police will rely on "fitness" tests to check reaction times and co-ordination if they suspect a driver has been taking drugs.
Also new equipment will use samples of saliva or sweat to detect in minutes whether a driver has consumed drugs including cannabis, cocaine, heroin and amphetamines.
Adam Briggs assistant chief constable of Cleveland police states that; 'Up until now it's been difficult for us to do enough about it. We need this new tool. Once we've proved it works we plan to move quickly to enable it to be used more widely.'
