Pay Per Mile Bike Insurance - What it Could Mean to Motorcyclists

With the likely hood of pay per mile bike insurance being a reality within the next few years this article attempts to discuss what this might mean to the bike enthusiast.

The debate rages on about whether or not the concept of pay per mile insurance in general is a fair way to charge the consumer for their premium. If the system is not set up in a manner that will take all classes of drivers into account then some parts of the motoring community could see their insurance costs rocket to unmanageable proportions. On the other hand if your part of the two wheeled motoring community then the prospect of pay per mile bike insurance could be a very tempting one.

Lower Costs

Unfortunately the hard core motorcyclists amongst us who depend on their bikes all year round, whether it be for commuting or for work purposes will have to wait and see how they will be affected. For those of us who ride our bikes solely for pleasure in the summer months this pay per mile bike insurance will surely be a welcome change.

The changes in the way we are charged for our insurance are simple, the rider will be charged only for each mile they ride their machine. From any leisure riders point of view this must be good news because I for one am fed up of paying astronomical amounts on an a years insurance premium, when in reality I am only getting 6 months use out of it.

This change in insurance could also open up a lot more possibilities for the rider. Due to the fact that yearly insurance costs could be cut by the new scheme it means that those super bikes could be in reach of the lower paid members of the biking community. This could be a welcome change for people who have often dreamed of owning a Ducati 998, Aprilia RSV Mille or Honda Fireblade but been restricted to a 600 due to insurance costs.

Awareness

The fact that pay per mile bike insurance will possibly bringing down costs it also means that the world of biking will be accessible to more people. The more people that get onto a bike then the better general awareness there will be on the roads, which can only be a good thing for the biking world.

So if your favoured mode of transport is two wheeled and you struggle to meet the costs of this pleasurable pass time then a reprise may be just around the corner, watch this space.

Poll

Should tax discs be scrapped in favour of charging per mile?

Yes. I don't use the roads much so shouldn't pay the same as everyone else.
No. People who drive for a living would be far worse off
