Parents liable for kids' scooter misuse

Thinking of buying your kid one of those mini-scooters? If you are, I think you should read this before going to the shop.

The police are sending out a warning to parents, that they will be liable for prosecution if their kids do not behaved apporiately.

This police warning follows the new craze sweeping london, involving youths riding around public areas on these mini bikes. The bike are electric-powered and cost between £150-500. but if the warning from the police is any thing to go by, then this craze could soon come to an end.

The police have been concered with the number of children riding these bikes on public pavement and it is causing distress to local residents with the load nosie they make. The police are hoping that this warning will discrouage parents from by the bike for their kids.

These bike are not toys and if they are used on the road or public places the road traffic law will apply to them, as they are in the same class as mopeds.

Inspector Craig Middleton, of Haringey Safer Neighbourhoods told the Muswell Hill Journal that "There is a misconception that using one of these vehicles in a public area or on the pavement is acceptable under the law. It isn't.

"If caught, you may be prosecuted for having no insurance, no licence, no crash helmet, no road fund licence and for driving recklessly."

He aslo warned that, "Parents knowingly allowing the use of these vehicles in a public area may also be liable to prosecution for aiding and abetting driving without insurance."

Should tax discs be scrapped in favour of charging per mile?

Yes. I don't use the roads much so shouldn't pay the same as everyone else.
